AMI Mentorship Program

A Message from the AMI Mentorship Committee

AMI Mentorship Program

We’re excited to see so much enthusiasm for the AMI Mentorship Program! Many of you have reached out asking about being matched with a mentor, and we want to let you know that the committee is actively recruiting new mentors and implementing an improved matching system to better serve our members.

Please stay tuned — matching will open soon, and we’ll share an announcement as soon as the program is ready to launch. Thank you for your patience as we put everything in place!

-The AMI Mentorship Committee

The AMI is dedicated to ensuring that our association effectively addresses the diverse needs of our members, and we believe that direct, personal outreach is paramount in achieving this objective. In line with this commitment, we have introduced the Mentorship Program. Mentors within this program offer a unique and personal approach to addressing members' inquiries. These mentors not only bring a wealth of practical professional experiences but also draw from their leadership roles within the AMI, creating a dynamic support system for our members.

Program Goals and Objectives:

  • Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills within the AMI community.
  • Support the professional development of both mentors and mentees.
  • Strengthen the sense of community and collaboration among members.
  • Provide guidance for career advancement and skill enhancement.

Program Structure:

  • Duration: The program will run in six-month intervals in 2025, January-July and July-December, with the option to renew for additional cycles.
  • The first mentee sign ups will open in January 2025, and announcements will be made via email. If a mentee does not indicate their mentor preferences by the deadline, they must wait until the next Mentorship matching period.
  • Eligibility: The Mentorship Program is open to Professional, Associate, Student, and Emeritus Members of the AMI.
  • Matching: Mentees will have the opportunity to review the list of mentors and indicate their preferred mentors via an online form. After the sign up window closes, the AMI Mentorship Committee will use these preferences to match mentees with mentors.
  • Meetings: Mentors and mentees should meet regularly, whether in person, virtually, or via email/phone.
  • Orientation/Networking Events: The Mentorship Committee will facilitate a virtual mentorship kickoff/networking event at the beginning of the mentorship year to set expectations and guidelines for both mentors and mentees. The Mentorship Mixer at the annual conference serves as an additional networking event.

Learn more about the roles of mentors and mentees below!

Mentees:

The AMI Mentorship Program is open to Professional, Associate, and Student members of the AMI who are interested in connecting with a mentor and participating in the mentor program. The program provides a unique benefit to AMI members who are new to the association, new to the field of medical illustration, or simply would like to connect with a fellow AMI member who can serve as their mentor.

Interested mentees can fill out an application form, indicating their preferred mentors.

  • Returning mentees will have the option to continue with the same mentor or select a new mentor.
  • All mentees, including returning mentees, MUST fill out the application each cycle.
  • If an interested mentee does not indicate their mentor preferences by the deadline, they must wait until the next matching period.

Mentors:

Mentoring an AMI member is one of the most gratifying services you will ever experience in the AMI. It's about making new friends, growing a network, learning together, building leadership, and having fun. The role of a Mentor is to share knowledge, advice, and guidance and to help your Mentee learn about the resources of the AMI, grow their knowledge and foster the beginnings of their career. It’s also about strengthening our field through tailored advisory to our newest members. The rewards of becoming a mentor are priceless. The Mentorship Program welcomes new mentors to sign on at any time. If you are interested in signing up to be a Mentor, Click Here!

Please note that Mentors roll over each year until they let AMI HQ or Mentorship Committee Chair, Michael Boasso, know that they are unavailable to serve as a Mentor.
